Remakes and personal experiences

I wanted to add to Natasha's arguements about remakes of history. I agree that everyone has their own experience of different events, and because of that, there will never be only one version of what happened. Not only do people have their own experiences of events, but also their own feelings towards these events. Each remake or rewrite of history poses a different aspect of a certain situation that we, the outsiders, are left to consider in order to come up with an abstract idea of the events that took place, and from that a general conclusion on history is made. All significant events in history involve more than one person, and as long as that occurs, I feel there will always be more than one version of history. People's reasonings, experiences, motivations, and feelings all need to be taken into concideration when dealing with their "version" of the story.

The Play

I just wanted to agree with what Natalie and Melissa were saying about the play last week. I felt as though each girl wearing the wig represented a different aspect of Alice, while at the same time, uniting as one Alice. I also thought the puppet was effective to make give the play more of a serious sense with the almost eerie movements that it made. This sense helped to show a more realistic side of the Alice in Wonderland story, rather than the playful Disney version. I had never seen a play performed in that way before, so it was interesting to be able to see something different.

re: rewriting history

I have to agree with Natasha on this one, sorry Jackie. I feel that when something happens and it is extremely important and affects a lot of people such as many unpleasant incidents that have gone down in history, there is always going to be various opinions and viewpoints on the situation. People will most likely remember the exact spot they were at when the incident took place and also what their first reactions were. Therefore, this will cause different outlooks on the situation overall. In the end I feel there could never be an exact account of what took place because everyone has a different way of looking at a situation. Therefore many versions of the incident could be wrote according to what people thought about it when it actually happened and how people feel abut it today.

Response to Jackie's Post Re. "Remakes"

I just wanted to respond to Jackie's post and the conversation that we had last week in tutorial regarding "remakes". Although I do understand the point that Jackie is making, there are some reasons behind her argument that I disagree with. When September 11th happened, we were all in some way (either directly or indirectly) affected by the situation and the aftermath. Many people have spoke, written, drawn etc. about what happened. However, the feelings and opinions that people have towards the same event are extremely different. Following 9/11 some people felt so strongly that the Americans had been victims of a terroist attack that they became scared and in many cases even prejudiced against and violent towards those of the same ethnicity as the terrorists. On the other hand, some people felt completely differently about what happened, for example there is a group of people who have made a "documentary" about 9/11 exposing the attack as a tragic "hoax" put on by the American government in order to gain support (http://www.loosechange911.com/ for anyone who is interested. These are obviously two extreme positions on what really occurred, but the point is that are remarkably different. If there is no "truth" as to what really happened at the time, then like you said there will obviously be many different interpretations later. I don't feel like there is a problem with people later "re-writting" the events because there is no one true version even at the time that it happens. There will always be many different stories, opinions and feelings so nobody can really "get it wrong" present or future.

This weeks tutorial (Jan 25)

So I would just like to say that I really enjoyed this weeks tutorial and everywhere it brought us. As I stated in class, I think it's important for people to experience history wether it be in history books or fables like Animal farm. If there were not renditions or redo's done on amazing peices of art the world would be a very boring place... There would be no movies on the wars we went through, only one historical perception on important historical events and no debates because I think that if we had no renditions or numerouse writtings on one event, there would be a lot of absolute truths and no opinions would be needed. So keep them comming with good movies and good interpertations or renditions of anything important!

Last nights play...(one crazy night)

That was a very weird yet interesting play. How long did you work on this play? I got a little confused when the wig was being passed around between the 3 girls. What was that supposed to mean? Are they supposed to represent 3 different side of alice?

response to jen's comment

I also understand what point your trying to get across Jen...But do u think historical writters, song makers, producers or anyone of that sort want to be changed? or revised? They set out these plays, scripts or whatever for the soul purpose of their thoughts, opinions, and passions at that specific time period are expressed not becuase they want others to find out what it means, translate it and restructure it in the present. History is history. For Example: Do you think there should be cartoons about the World Trade Center? So that children in our day in age can relate or recognize what people went through and carry it on to their children? It simple really, We didnt live in this particular time period or encounter what these people did at their time. So why cant they have what they experienced and we have what weve experienced? Most Importantly, if people encourage or discourage one another to make new developed ideas from past ones and branch them into present tense, then whats the point in having history at all? it will just be replaced or mis-interperated and made completely different for what? to help satisfy its viewers?
P.S. I LOVE YOU JEN!!!! :) lmao

is there a compremise?

As far as our discussion in seminar goes... I honestly think that there will never be this compremise where everyone is satisfied of the outcome a movie, play, poem, script whatever brings to the table. For example: Shakespeare may write a play which in his and some other minds may be of some interest and may be viewed as admirable. Whereas, to others it may as well be written by their great great great grandparents, and just sucks and thats fine but it doesnt mean people should produce re-makes or mockeries of the work he has presented with comparisons to 10 Things I hate About You does it? Let me know what you think...;)

Jackals and Arabs

The two stories of Jackals and Arabs, to me were very similar in the since that they told the same story however paraphrasing or using different words in certain situations throughout the readings. I felt the 1st reading was more story-like whereas the 2nd reading’s text seemed to be more exact. The main differences came in the word order and how the 2nd reading used more words to describe the story. For example the first version says, "An Arab, tall and white" and the 2nd says, “An Arab, tall and dressed in white." There is a big difference because the reader of the 1st might interpret it to mean an Arab persons skin as white whereas the second indicates that they are dressed in white which has nothing to do with skin colour. There is also the instance at the beginning where the 1st text says, “Our colleagues were asleep,” and the 2nd one says “My companions were asleep,” the second one is more logical and realistic because to me colleagues are people that you work with which doesn’t really make sense in the story so I believe the 2nd story is far better worded.
