Jackals and Arabs
The two stories of Jackals and Arabs, to me were very similar in the since that they told the same story however paraphrasing or using different words in certain situations throughout the readings. I felt the 1st reading was more story-like whereas the 2nd reading’s text seemed to be more exact. The main differences came in the word order and how the 2nd reading used more words to describe the story. For example the first version says, "An Arab, tall and white" and the 2nd says, “An Arab, tall and dressed in white." There is a big difference because the reader of the 1st might interpret it to mean an Arab persons skin as white whereas the second indicates that they are dressed in white which has nothing to do with skin colour. There is also the instance at the beginning where the 1st text says, “Our colleagues were asleep,” and the 2nd one says “My companions were asleep,” the second one is more logical and realistic because to me colleagues are people that you work with which doesn’t really make sense in the story so I believe the 2nd story is far better worded.

I personally do understand what Jackie is trying to say….. BUT I completely disagree! Things change, times change, people’s interest’s change and in order to keep the targeted audience interested change and updating is pretty much mandatory. It doesn’t matter if its plays, poems, songs, scripts or whatever…. in order to keep and maintain a good audience, writers need to make sure that whatever they are writing is updated and interesting for people today.
As far as re-writing something from the past, I don’t think that it should be seen as a “mockery” but almost as a compliment…. Obviously the first one was something of interest and what people clearly enjoyed so I think by updating it is just allowing for more viewers to see their work.. in a new modernized way! ( not a bad thing )
